Mercury Abatement and Disposal Services at Colorado Hazard Control

Mercury (Hg) is a naturally occurring element in the Earth’s crust that is found in the air, water and soil. Humans cannot create or destroy mercury and when at room temperature, mercury is a silvery liquid metal. This material is typically found in products such as resilient flooring, thermometers, switches and light bulbs. It conducts electricity, expands uniformly with temperature and is not destroyed by combustion. When heat is applied this material changes into a vapor that easily travels long distances. For these reasons, it is used in many products found in homes and schools.

The toxicity of mercury can endanger living organisms and can produce adverse health effects in humans; a common route of exposure occurs while breathing mercury vapor. These exposures can occur when mercury or products that contain mercury break and release mercury to the air, particularly in warm or poorly-ventilated indoor spaces. Mercury exposure at high levels can harm the brain, heart, kidneys, lungs, and immune systems of people of all ages.

Mercury can be found in the following:

  • Thermometers
  • Light switches
  • Thermostats
  • Resilient Flooring
  • Paints (prior to 1992)
  • Pesticides (prior to 1994)
  • Batteries
  • High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps
  • Blood pressure gauges or sphygmomanometers
  • Disinfectants
  • Antiseptics
  • Barometers
  • Older Microwave Ovens

Mercury abatement activities including disposal are currently regulated by the EPA, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and many state plans. Mercury has been shown to cause serious health hazards if not taken care of properly.
